The women's tennis team looks to the 2008 season with excitement and anticipation. Led by senior captain Margaret Tufton, the Lynx will have experienced players at 4 of the top 6 positions. With the addition of Anna Beth Sanford at the #1 position, the women will aim for 1 of the top 4 positions in the conference. With a pre-season Atlantic South ranking of #8, Rhodes begins a demanding schedule with Division I team, University of Memphis, followed by matches against Hendrix, Colorado College, and (new conference member) Birmingham Southern. A spring trip to Texas will find the Lynx playing Hardin Simmons and UT Tyler. Washington University and Coe College will provide quality matches before the demanding SCAC Conference Tournament.
This year's Rhodes Invitational will feature LeTourneau from Texas, Mississippi College, and conference teams Hendrix, Centre, and Oglethorpe. The expanded format, with two matches on Saturday and two on Sunday, will be excellent preparation for the SCAC Tournament.
"Our goal is to improve our performance with each match. Doubles combinations will be key to this year's success. With the SCAC as one of the top Division III conferences in the nation, we want our players to be mentally and physically ready for the challenges ahead."
The Lynx will be dominated by senior players Margaret Tufton, Durham Kyle, and Morgan Willard. Juniors Allison Tinney and Kelsey Mansmann will provide strength at the top. Sophomores Anna Moak and Lacy Ward will provide experience at the bottom, and freshman Aya Kato will provide additional depth for the 'traveling 8.' Anna Beth Sanford will begin her career at Rhodes in the #1 position. A difficult position for a freshman, but with the quality of #1 players Sanford will face, her game will continue to grow to the next level.
